In her early life Mpumi struggled to get educated. Her mother managed to enroll her at the Durban University of Technology
(DUT), which used to be known as Technikon Natal. Whilst at DUT she studied video technology for a short period before she dropped out due to lack of tuition fees. The educational route to success did not work out therefore she decided to pursue her childhood dream of singing. Consequently, she joined Mbongeni Ngema’s Academy of Performing Arts where she perfected her musical talent. However, when she finally saved money, she got back to school.
Mpumi’s musical journey was as much of a struggle as her mother’s life. The talented singer started singing at a very young age and performed whenever she found the audience wayback in primary school. She revealed that most record labels rejected her, which almost killed her dream. Finally, her break came through when she was discovered by one of the country’s biggest producers Heavy K the Drumboss. Heavy K provided her with a recording platform and helped her work on Umoya, which was a hit. She has since then captured the hearts of South Africans and the rest of Africa with her smooth vocals.
